‘Hair Love’ wins Oscar

HJ (Hairdressers Journal) reports that ‘Hair Love’, a film all about a black father struggling to do his daughter’s hair, has won the Best Animated Short Film Oscar at Sunday’s Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

The film was made by Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver, with actress Issa Rae as the voice of ‘Mom’.

According to HJ, during his acceptance speech, Cherry spoke about wanting to normalise black hair.

‘Hair Love’ has ignited much-needed conversations about the importance of hair and representation in the black community, as well as the need to embrace and demonstrate children’s different natural styles.
